AMD recently said it will begin shipments of its highly-anticipated 12-core AMD Opteron microprocessors code-named Magny-Cours. Advanced Micro Devices indicated that the shipments are limited & are intended to prepare for the launch of servers powered by the new chips. Opteron 6000-series processors will service TDPs from 85W to 140W & offer clock speeds between 1.70GHz and 2.4GHz, designed to fit into the new Socket G34, a native dual-die Socket design. The G34 substrate features two 45nm dies – each with 6x core and private 512K L2 per core, featuring a quad-channel, 288-bit interface.
The G34 socket fits from 8 to 16 cores, available through 45nm Magny-Cours & 32nm Interlagos die-shrink. In a 4-Soket G34 box, can we have 48 cores and up to 768GB of DDR3 memory.
